English

Entrepreneurial behaviour, as an emerging field of research, aims to explore the antecedents and consequences of entrepreneurial actions. In recent decades, causal and effectual entrepreneurial behaviours have garnered attention in studies. Causal behaviour focuses on formal planning, prediction and competitive analysis while effectual behaviour emphasizes the utilization of existing resources, control, and flexibility. Entrepreneurial behaviours influence business performance and growth, yet business success is also influenced by other factors such as business model innovation. The present research examined the impact of each component of entrepreneurial behaviour, including causal and effectual behaviours, on business model innovation. It further assessed the causal and effectual behaviours – firm performance relationship and examined the mediating effect of business model innovation on the relationship between entrepreneurial behaviour and firm performance. This study examined 103 family firms; the results of the data analysis using structural equation modelling to validate the proposed conceptual model and test the hypotheses demonstrate that causal and effectual behaviours had a positive impact on business model innovation and business performance. Moreover, business model innovation played a mediating role in the relationship between causal and effectual entrepreneurial behaviours and a firm’s performance. The findings of this study were compared with previous research, and suggestions for future studies were provided. The present study provided valuable insights by demonstrating the impact of each aspect of entrepreneurial behaviour on business model innovation. In addition, by emphasizing the significant role that business model innovation plays as an intermediary in interpreting the influence of entrepreneurial behaviour on firm performance, it contributed to advancing knowledge in this field.
