Due to the increasing energy utilization and the urge to mitigate it, particularly within the construction sector, recognizing architectural strategies in hot and arid climates assumes a significant function in identifying climate-adaptive construction methodologies as a guiding principle for the future. While many perceive sustainability as a modern concept in architecture, its principles have been integrated into design practices for centuries.
These techniques offer multiple advantages, such as utilizing the building mass and geothermal energy, while also integrating natural elements that enhance the aesthetic quality of the landscape. In this investigation, the thermal dynamics of subterranean strategies in the vernacular residential buildings in the city of Kashan are examined. The Abbasian mansion in Kashan was analyzed as the case study, and the findings indicate that indoor air temperature in the earth-sheltered chambers exhibits reduced variability. According to the simulation results, the amplitude of indoor air temperature is approximately 1.9 degrees Celsius in entirely subterranean rooms, which ranges from 1.8 to 7.2 degrees in rooms constructed in a sunken garden style.
