Abstract

In this paper an approach based on computer simulation has been introduced to instruct the structure and application of thyristor gate firing circuits and the capabilities of the PSpice simulator used to simulate the power electronic circuits The use of Diac in basic Dimmer circuit and second order Dimmer as an ACAC converter UJT with zero crossing detector and voltage source PUT with zero crossing detector and current source pulse width modulation and gate IC driver have been analyzed theoretically and their results have been compared with the PSpice simulation outcomes to form an approach to instruct the application of thyristor gate trigger circuits At first these results tackle and meet the educational needs of students who are interested in applicable circuits and find them less in the power electronic references easily Secondly the students will be familiarized with the significant capabilities of Spicebased simulators in analyzing the large and complicated power electronic circuits Finally the proposed approach shows the students that there is no fundamental difference between the concepts of the theory presented in classrooms with simulation results that are close to reality
